Everything of a developmental nature with the Bio Materials Digester (BMD) goes back to finding ways to deal with the “end-of-life” for our PLA bottles. From the very beginning, in 2003, Bill Horner, our founder, was convinced that the PLA bottles would only be a confusion to consumers, if there was not a robust collection program at the point of use, in “closed-loop” venues, and a way to make the bottles go away—peacefully.
In 2007, Horner’s company purchased a food digester company, and started the process of seeing their immediate value for the reduction of food waste, but experienced difficulties in unlocking the secrets of removing other plant-based containers along with the food waste. That company was sold, and the R&D focus went to the creation of a large-scale platform for the production of preforms, caps, and labels for their SOLU water bottle, which is currently being placed in twelve “closed-loop” model sites around the world by www.single-use-solutions.com
Finally, in 2019, with the establishment of an office in Amsterdam, the European prospective on waste requirements for food-related businesses caused the R&D action pieces of the waste food and packaging puzzle to take shape. “Bottle Model Digester LLC” was formed to finish out the work that had been done previously, and the BMD food digester came into being to form the current overall contribution to the environment that was originally meant to be operational many years before 2022. While the company remains head-quartered in the USA, a warehouse and training component is located in the Netherlands, led by Gerco Leeflang.
